Grade 1 is a dynamic and nurturing environment where students develop essential approaches to learning within the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework. Through a focus on thinking skills, students engage in critical and creative thinking, analysing and evaluating issues, and forming decisions. They observe carefully, synthesise understandings, and make unexpected connections, fostering a deeper understanding of concepts.

Students explore alternative solutions and ask “what if” questions, promoting inquiry-based learning and visible thinking routines. Additionally, they transfer their skills and knowledge across various contexts, applying them in unfamiliar situations and making connections between units of inquiry. Reflection and metacognition are integral as students identify strengths, areas for improvement, and set goals for their learning journey.

Embedded within the Grade 1 curriculum are research skills that empower students to navigate and interpret information effectively. From formulating research questions to synthesizing and communicating findings, students engage in information literacy, media literacy, and communication skills. They gather information from diverse sources, utilize emergent writing skills to document observations, and present their findings using a variety of modalities.

Furthermore, Grade 1 students develop strong communication skills, exchanging information through listening, interpreting, and speaking. They express themselves articulately, participate in meaningful conversations, and negotiate ideas collaboratively with peers and teachers.

Symbolic exploration and expression are encouraged as students engage with language through reading, writing, mathematics, and mark-making, fostering a rich understanding of symbols and their meanings.

Through social and self-management skills, students cultivate positive interpersonal relationships, social and emotional intelligence, organisation, mindfulness, perseverance, and resilience, equipping them with the tools to navigate challenges and succeed in their academic and personal endeavours.
