Can we get a subsidy? (Pre-Kindergarten)

What are the SFO costs?

SFO is a Danish term that covers all after school activities for Kindergarten to Grade 3. Private schools in Denmark get a subsidy from the government for this. These activities normally take place after school in Danish schools, not all children in a Danish school will attend the SFO and the subsidy is adjusted accordingly. At our school such activities are integrated into the school day. We receive the SFO subsidy for all children attending K to Grade 3. However, in order to be entitled to the subsidy from the Danish Government, we are obliged to separately invoice a part of our tuition as an SFO Fee.  It is not an extra fee but an integral part of our tuition fee and should be covered by your company. If you have any questions, please contact the business office.

How much do learning support services cost?

Learning support fees are in addition to regular tuition and school expenses for students at each grade level.

Academic Excellence Scholarship

Academic Excellence Scholarships
We make decisions about which students should be offered academic scholarship based on two criteria – academic and personal. As the IB Diploma is an academically demanding programme, and as our purpose in giving scholarships is to attract very able students into the programme who might otherwise not be able to afford CIS, academic abilities are given priority in the first part of the academic scholarship process, the scholarship exams. We make decisions about which students should be offered a scholarship based on two criteria – academic and personal.

Once students have completed scholarship exam papers in English, Maths and have been deemed to be ‘scholarship students’ by our Head of Language A, and our Head of Maths, applicants are then invited to attend an interview. (Successful applicants may later be asked to take a language test, but this is for placement rather than admission purposes.)

Academic Criteria

  • Students demonstrate, in the scholarship exams, that they have the ability to work at a high level in both Maths and English.
  • A ‘high level’ can be defined as the ability to achieve at least a 5 in both HL English A and Maths SL, in the final Diploma Programme exams, which are scored on a 1-7 basis.
  • A ‘high level’ could also be defined as, in English, producing a literary commentary as part of the scholarship exam, which shows textual analytical skills beyond that to be expected from an average student of this age. In the Maths scholarship exam, a ‘high level’ of skill would be shown by possessing efficient numeracy skills in areas we would expect students of this age to have covered in their schools, alongside the ability to think creatively through a number of Maths problems.
  • While grades on a recent school report may help us to make final decisions about which students should attend the interview stage, particularly where a student may have performed less well on one component (perhaps Maths), than on the second component (English), it must be stressed that our primary academic concern is how students perform on both the scholarship exams, and NOT on how well they may have done in school prior to the start of the scholarship process

Calculators and dictionaries are not allowed in the exams.

Personal Criteria

Once students have proven their academic ability, the interview stage is designed to consider the extent to which the applicants can contribute to the CIS Community – and how well they will fit into our particular international school environment. We understand that the students will undoubtedly be nervous and a little tense throughout the interview, so it may help to know that the following skills are of importance to us:

  • The ability to speak with confidence to a small group of adults
  • The ability to answer standard interview questions in some detail, and to be able to articulate their views on issues in the news/current affairs
  • The ability to make a presentation on a topic about which they are passionate – or to demonstrate a particular skill or ability – perhaps playing a musical instrument, reciting poetry, doing magic tricks …..we’re open to all skills!
  • The ability to articulate what and how they will contribute to the CIS community should they be awarded a scholarship.

Tips and advice from current scholarship students

The interview: How do I make a presentation? Who will interview me?

We want you to show us what you are really good at, or what excites you. So, if you play an instrument, or sing, or can juggle, or write short stories, you may wish to perform for us. We can arrange for a range of musical instruments to be available.

Alternatively, you may want to make a presentation about your passion in life, or tell us how you feel about a particular issue which concerns you. We can have a laptop and projector available, if you wish, or you can just stand up and make a speech.

The presentation gives you a chance to show us something really important about you. It should only last five minutes – so you need to be well prepared.

You will be interviewed by the High School Principal, Mr Stephen McIlroy, a member of the School Board, and either the Middle Years Programme Coordinator or the Diploma Programme Coordinator.
