In many ways Theatre is the art form that most resembles life itself. In performance an audience sees characters act out their lives in person, creating a visceral and sensory experience with enormous creative possibilities. An exploration of this unique aspect of Drama and Theatre is at the core of the Drama course at CIS.
Another key element of the Drama course ties in with the school wide standards for the subject, namely that all drama teaching at CIS uses the ensemble approach. Although all aspects of Theatre are explored (acting, directing etc.), the focus is on creating a communal sense of creative achievement rather than individual successes, collaboration being of the utmost importance.
The Drama course seeks to enable students to appreciate the art form, academically and artistically, through research, analysis, practical exploration and performance. The units cover both performance skills as well as the skills of the director and designer, and each unit has an element of dramaturgical research.
