9th grader Amber on Amanda Gorman: Making History

Amanda Gorman is the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. Her poem “The Hill We Climb” is now considered as the tradition of occasional poetry. Amanda Gorman is a 22 year old black woman who’s name will be now known after the 20th of January as she recited her poem at Joe Biden’s inauguration. She is now the first poet in the U.S history to ever recite at the superbowl.

Amanda Gorman was born in Los Angeles, California in 1998. She was raised by her mother, with two siblings. Gorman has the auditory processing disorder (APD) and is hypersensitive to sound. APD is a hearing problem in which people can’t process what they hear in the same way as other people due to their ears and brain not fully coordinating. She told CNN in a recent interview that to recite the poem as perfectly as possible, it took a lot of practice as she has trouble pronouncing and hearing certain sounds.

On the 20th of January Amanda Gorman recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” which was written for unity, collaboration and togetherness. Gorman talks about racial injustice, climate change and the past mistakes that have been made around the world, She talks about the U.S in particular as that is her country and her pride as quoted: “That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb. If only we dare. It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it.” She has also stated on the inauguration that she finished her poem on January 6th on the day of the U.S Capitol attack. Amanda Gorman ends her poem by saying that there is still hope in changing and fighting for what’s right with racism and trying to save the world from climate change: “For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it”.

This poem is a perfect example of how we, as a community, are a variety of different nations who share the same environment and we don’t discriminate and still live in peace while respecting our countries or others nations.
