Kindergarten learns about the Year of the Ox

“We had a mom come in and she showed a video explaining the traditions of why and how Chinese New Year is celebrated,” explains Nina, our Kindergarten teacher. “Children were curious about the evil monster Nian, who was scared of fire, loud sounds, and the color red. We are now in the year of the ox and the characteristics of this animal are hard-working, intelligent, and reliable. We learned that families usually gather for a big dinner together, eating dumplings among other things and the young ones get a red envelope with money instead of presents. We got to try writing ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese on a special paper with brush and water.”
