Black History Month is February. Learn more about the importance of celebrating it and more of what you can do here.

Black History Month is celebrated during the month of February, officially observed in the United States and Canada, with other countries such as the UK also dedicating this month. Celebrating the works, achievements and culture of black people, it is a very important time to teach not only children but adults too, the value of learning black history. Learning about true and accurate history, highlighting the right and the wrong and presenting the information from important perspectives, is not only vital for our education, but for the way that our society works now and the way that it will work in the future.

Each year, a theme is given to the month. For 2021, the theme is “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity”. It honours every black family and the diversity that they hold. Celebrating and shedding light on the family life of black people is such a significant theme for any year. It pays tribute to the reality of black families and separates such reality from the stereotypes that are often given.

The idea of a time to recognize the lives of black people came about in 1926, almost 100 years ago. Since then, the idea has reached many parts of the world and taking a look back at the previous themes, we are able to see advancements that were essential to explore from many years past, and that still are today.
