By Sophie Rasmussen

Animal Crossing

This charming game for the Nintendo Switch is a stress-relieving, comforting social simulation game that takes place in real-time. In this game created by Katsuya Iguchi, you can enjoy the experience of decorating your island and welcoming cute new islanders. It’s a peaceful game that doesn’t involve violence or combat and allows you to set your own objectives as there is no defined plot.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

This game takes place in the fantastical world of the Sprixie Kingdom, in which Mario and his friends have to venture to save the sprixies from the evil Bowser. As mentioned in the title, the game is more 3 dimensional than the usual Mario games we’ve seen in the past, and this exciting new detail adds a nice touch to the gameplay. This interactive game can be played on the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch!

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is another relaxing game for you to wind down with and it’s versatile as it can be played across many platforms. The basis of the game’s narrative is that the player plays as the main character who has taken over their late grandfather’s farm. Throughout the game, you forge, farm and socialize, and aren’t bound to any particular obligations as the game is open-ended. Not only that, but you can also play with up to three other people.

Project Sekai: Colourful Stage

If you are a fan of the exciting genre of Vocaloid music, then this game might just be for you!  This rhythm game is available on ios and android and introduces you to some of Hatsune Miku, KAITO, MEIKO, Kagamine Rin and Len’s diverse music. The story opens with the main character, a girl from Shibuya in Japan, noticing a strange appearance of a song on her smartphone. From there the musical adventure commences.

Minecraft

A game from many people’s childhood that has recently resurfaced and gained popularity once again is the amazing 3 dimensional, block-based world of Minecraft. The ability to create survival or creative worlds, to play on servers with your friends and thousands of others, as well as being able to try “mods” made by various creators makes the game so exciting and not repetitive. It’s a classic game that children and adults alike can enjoy.

Genshin Impact

This RPG not only has an intriguing story to follow, as well as world quests but also has a vast and expansive map for you to explore, along with your team of gacha characters that you can collect from pulling on “banners”. What makes this game so exciting is the vast array of objectives that you can achieve, not only the literal achievements that you gain “primogems” (in-game currency) from but also collecting artefacts to boost your characters strength as you fight enemies and collect treasures. If you think you’ve run out of ideas on what to do, you still have daily commissions to complete each day and you can join your friends in “co-op” to help them progress. There are frequent new events or story quests added to the game and large updates that add permanent content for you to explore. Not to mention that the game is completely free and can be played on IOS as well as Windows.

Biomutant

The recently released (this year) “Biomutant” is an action RPG in which you play from a third person’s point of view in an open world, as a warrior in the form of a type of mutated animal, using different weapons along the way with parts that you have collected. This makes for a lively game, with beautiful graphics and scenery.

Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The protagonist of this adventure game is a boy named Link, who has just awakened from a century-long slumber in the kingdom of Hyrule, who is put into a fantasy-filled quest in which he must save the princess. The game is available on the Nintendo Switch as well as the Wii U and is definitely worth exploring!

Super Smash Bros

This combat game is filled with exciting maps that have different features and a variety of different characters with different play styles and aesthetics. This is one of the most fun games to play when with others, as the competitive nature of the game makes it exciting and everyone is given the opportunity to try different characters and test their skills on the tricky moving maps.

You can purchase and collect weapons, as well as tame horses and ride around the map as an outlaw. This game is highly rated on Steam, and has hours worth of content to play through!

Resident Evil Village

For a more mature audience, this horror game is something you might want to check out. After the events of the previous Resident Evil game, the main character Ethan Winters finds himself living in Europe with his family, recovering from the trauma of the past, until he is once again sent on a dangerous journey filled with enemies in order to recover his baby. The game is jam-packed with jumpscares and horrific-looking characters as well as puzzles, which makes for a rollercoaster of emotions and satisfies players looking for a challenge.
